Shoulder Arthroscopy

The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body, which also makes it the easiest to injure. Arthroscopy lets us repair it through openings of about half a centimetre.

Shoulder Arthroscopy

The shoulder moves in almost every direction. Bone gives it shape, but muscles, tendons, ligaments and the joint capsule hold it together and keep it stable. When these structures tear, wear or become inflamed, the result is pain, weakness, clicking or a shoulder that slips out of place. Shoulder arthroscopy treats most of these problems with a camera and fine instruments, with less pain and a quicker recovery than open surgery.

When is it needed?

  • Recurrent shoulder dislocation and instability
  • Rotator cuff tears
  • Shoulder impingement
  • Labral tears
  • Calcific tendinitis
  • Loose bodies in the joint

How it is done

  1. 1
    Anaesthesia

General anaesthesia, often combined with a nerve block for comfort after surgery.

  2. 2
    Camera portal

A high-definition camera is placed through a 0.5 cm opening and the joint is inspected on screen.

  3. 3
    Repair

Instruments pass through a second small opening to reattach tendons or the labrum with anchors, or remove calcium and inflamed tissue.

  4. 4
    Home quickly

The operation usually takes about an hour, and most patients go home the same or the next day.

Advantages

  • Detailed view of the whole joint
  • Lower risk of infection and complications
  • Less pain after surgery
  • Small, cosmetic scars and faster recovery

Recovery

  1. Weeks 1–3Arm sling, simple pain relief and wound care.
  2. Weeks 2Stitches removed around day 14.
  3. Weeks 3–12Guided exercises to restore movement, then strength.

Common questions

How long will I wear the sling?

Usually 3–6 weeks, depending on what was repaired. A tendon repair needs longer protection than a clean-up procedure.

Is the pain after surgery severe?

Most patients have mild to moderate pain that is controlled well with simple painkillers and ice.

What should I avoid?

Sudden movements and lifting with the operated arm until your surgeon allows it. Keep up the recommended exercises without breaks.
